Discord, in repousse by Kantorai Discord, in repousse by Kantorai
A repousse study of my interpretation of Discord from MLP FiM. Made from 1mm copper plate, worked both sides on chasers pitch, heat patinated and polished with steel wool. My intention was to project a more malignant side of Discord, sort of like an hieroglyph from an old temple portraying prophesies of an ancient evil.

I suck at photography, so unfortunately this is the best picture I have of it so far. I'll try to set one up with better light conditions, propably. I'm also torn between just letting it be as it is or experimenting with a different patina/finish. Any comments/advice in that matter will be greatly appreciated, as the subject has been largely ignored in my schooling..

I had fun making it, but I'm not sure if I'll be making any more fan stuff. Not to say that fan art is somehow not time worthy, but towards the end it started to gall me that I was using another persons character.

Discord is copyright of Lauren Faust (I believe)

UPDATE: Thanks to Equestria Daily for featuring this in their craft compilation. You guys rock!

I really like this. The classical look of the repousse and Discord's status as an ancient evil go incredibly well together.

You, sir, have great talent. This looks amazing, and from my perspective captures a sort of archaic feel, as if it's a depiction of a dragon from some old forgotten Norse Saga.

Well, the archaic feel was the very thing I was gunning for with this, so it's nice to hear that shines through. Also, thank you! :D

Don't forget : "Everything is a Remix" ;-) [ -> [link] ]

Beyond the use of non-original characters, you've done something all by yourself. It's how art spreads.

It is a great compliment to an artist when his ideas inspire creativity for others !
Take a look at the fanmade episode "Double Rainboom". Who would dare say they don't have created something ?

This metal work make me think about some epic fanfic, you know ^^ ?
Like, a DaringDo-like adventure in a faraway land !

Creativity calls creativity.

You know, the best argument I've heard in defence of fan art was that all medieval art was essentially Bible fan art :) No point in re-inventing the wheel, but you might as well use it and maybe add your own little flair, no?

I like your idea about the fanfic, perhaps Daring could discover a lost pony civilization long-vanished from the face of the earth who made disturbing offerings to the Lord of Chaos..? ;)

Thanks for your input. I guess I will continue making pony stuff, after all. I had me a pretty good idea for Chrysalis..

Well darn. This is awesome. You indeed managed to make the sort of impression you intended. Looks either very ancient or like a picture from a medieval book depicting a chimera (which a draconequus pretty much is). I know jack about metalwork of any sort, but I know a job well done when I see it.

As for the fan thing, it's not so bad. You may not be the original maker of the character, but it's still your work right here. That, and using characters that have a following is likely to help you bring your art to their attention far more easily. That, and not everyone is ready to connect with a completely new set of characters for every single artist, after all.

Thank you very much for those kind words! It's also nice to hear I managed to convey the sort of effect I intended.

You make a good point about the fan thing. And I have to admit, on the other hand in does feel good to make art that connects with an already existing setting or whatchamacallit.. Gives me a nice feeling of participation, you know? And if I manage to add a little something of my own to the huge amount of fan content in existence, well, that does make me happy.

Indeed. This feeling of communality and participation is a strong thing, and a positive one at that. Besides, this example of your work here is unique in the field. I believe it's the first example of this medium I see in pony, or perhaps even in anything outside of architectural decorations of some sort. Keeping it up could give you a certain reputation as a maker of unique things.

Very nice! Love how you took the cartoon and brought it into reality. Whats the symbol though on the right side? I dont recall anything like that in the MLP Universe.

Thanks! And yes, the symbol.. Well, it was meant to be a star but wound up looking more like a satan worshippers cross. Universal symbol for evil, perhaps? A few people already mistook this one for Satan because of it :XD:

ah.well just add 4 more short lines to it going outward from the inner corners and there you go. Graphic symbol of a star like in airbrushing :)

I don't want to be a perfectionist (even though I will be right now, urgh) But the real Satanic Cross is this: [link]

The inverted cross is a St Peter's cross, because St Peter believed he wasn't worthy to be crucified like Jesus
Okay forgive me forgive for saying this
